The Katanino Forest Reserve, which is made up of miombo woodland, has seen heavy deforestation and degradation.

WeForest is restoring the forest using Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) and enrichment planting from local tree nurseries. Farmers around the reserve are engaged in restoration and trained in agroforestry, and capacity building will ensure full local support, ownership and responsibility for the forest.

Why and how we’re working here

42% of the Katanino Forest Reserve has already been lost and another 18% is heavily degraded, a trend that is likely to increase if there is no intervention, as the needs of the local community living in or around the forest are growing.

The project’s impact on people

The project aims to build local capacity to hand management of the reserve over to the communities. A livelihood plan will alleviate the pressure on the forest resources by providing alternative sources of income from activities such as sustainable agriculture, agroforestry and beekeeping.
Community members are co-creators of the forest management plan and will be able to participate and benefit meaningfully throughout the process, with a particular focus on women. © WeForest
A livelihood plan identifies schemes that could be implemented to alleviate the pressure on the forest resources and provide economic incentives. A survey of households sets the baseline to measure the impact of the schemes. © WeForest
In Katanino, marginalised and vulnerable groups, and particularly women, are typically the primary users of natural resources. The project has a strategy to engage with these groups and ensure that they are represented and can participate meaningfully. © WeForest
The Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) process enables communities to give or withhold consent to a project. © WeForest
In return for setting aside part of their land for Assisted Natural Regeneration, farmers receive beehives. © WeForest
