Although many grassland and scrub species can withstand it, high frequency fires – i.e. one area burning more often than once every three or four years – is likely to shift the vegetation towards fire-tolerant and fire-resistant species. Frequent fires seem to have reduced the plant biomass across the grasslands which may have caused a loss of soil, leading to more exposed rock and faster water runoff.
