With the approaching rainy season, this and other shelters are needed so that the base camp can continue to serve as a hub for Conservancy exploration and to accommodate visiting school groups learning about the Miombo ecosystem.
The shelters are constructed using local materials: a hardwood species locally known as Mubanga is used for the supporting poles, as it is a heavy and very durable wood. Dead specimens were collected within the Conservancy. The roof timbers are sourced from a local and well-managed pine plantation. The roof and walls will be constructed from locally collected dried grass and reeds. When it’s finished, the structure will blend in nicely with the Miombo woodland.
