Internship: assessing forest gain and loss through remote sensing
WeForest has supported three forest restoration projects on the Great Green Wall in Ethiopia. In these projects, we have been working with different restoration approaches: assisted natural regeneration, direct planting, enrichment planting, direct seeding, etc. The goal of this study is to check whether available remote sensing products can inform us of the restoration success (forest gain and forest loss) of our restoration sites.

APPROACH

  • Land use and land cover change analysis;
  • Analysis using the maps produced by Global Forest Watch;
  • Apply algorithms such as Break detection For Additive Seasonal Trends (BFAST) Monitor to identify pixels that deviate significantly as breakpoint;
  • Compare forest loss in the project areas and neighbouring areas before and after the conflict in Tigray (Desa’a project).

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree in Science, Geography, Engineering, Environmental studies or equivalent, or a professional certification in Geography, GIS, or Remote Sensing;
  • You have proven expertise in remote sensing data processing and geo-information systems;
  • You have sound programming skills in Python, or R, or Google Earth Engine;
  • Expertise in applying machine learning techniques on remote sensing data is an asset;
  • Specific expertise in SAR Remote Sensing is an asset;
  • Writing and presentation skills in English is key;
  • Ability to process, analyze, and model data in geospatial software (e.g., QGIS, Esri ArcGIS).
