Creating impact across three continents with MSD Animal Health

Overview

For almost a decade, MSD Animal Health and WeForest have worked hand in hand to restore forests while connecting sustainability to innovation in animal health. What began in 2016 as the ‘Tree Growing Initiative’, tied to MSD Animal Health’s SPHEREON® poultry vaccine technology, has grown into a global collaboration throughout MSD Animal Health, with the aquaculture sector coming on board to further drive positive environmental and social outcomes.

Together, MSD Animal Health and WeForest have grown more than 300 000 trees across seven forests on three continents, primarily in Zambia and Malawi. Beyond the numbers, the partnership demonstrates how integrating restoration projects into business operations can strengthen customer engagement, enhance brand leadership, and deliver meaningful impact for animals, people, and the environment.

Solution

The ‘Tree Growing Initiative’ links MSD Animal Health’s commercial success to environmental restoration: for every purchase of SPHEREON® poultry vaccines, trees are grown with WeForest. In recent years, the programme has expanded to include MSD Animal Health’s aquaculture business, amplifying its reach and impact.

By aligning restoration with its innovative technologies, MSD Animal Health demonstrates the value of the One Health approach—recognising the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. For WeForest, the collaboration provides long-term, reliable support to restore overlooked ecosystems such as the Miombo Regeneration Belt, while also empowering local communities with sustainable livelihoods.

Looking ahead, MSD Animal Health and WeForest are working to increase transparency, share learnings, and highlight the stories of communities on the ground. Together, they show how corporate innovation and environmental restoration can complement each other—building resilience for animals, people, and the planet.

For MSD Animal Health, the initiative enhances customer loyalty, differentiates its technologies, and strengthens its reputation and brand positioning as a leader in sustainable innovation. For WeForest, it delivers measurable restoration outcomes and long-term community benefits: healthier soils, improved water cycles, and diversified livelihoods through agroforestry and beekeeping.

Driving global impact through innovation and collaboration

In its first ten years, the partnership has grown over 300 000 trees across seven forests in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

trees growing in Zambia, strengthening the Miombo Regeneration Belt that supports 75% of the region’s population.
trees growing in Mount Mulanje, Malawi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, helping restore one of the country’s most critical ecosystems.
trees growing in Khasi Hills, India, supporting Khasi communities to regenerate their forest.
trees growing in Desa’a, Ethiopia, reversing land degradation and poverty through forest landscape restoration.
trees growing in Brazil, primarily restoring the Atlantic Forest to bring back wildlife.
trees growing in Mara, Tanzania, transitioning families to agroforestry.
