Internship in Agroforestry

Location: Belgium; remote telework 

Timeframe: 3 months at 15 – 20 hours per week (flexible)

Position summary 

The scope of the internship is to support the WeForest Agroforestry Program to develop tools and materials and  processes for project field teams.  

Areas of responsibility 

Under the supervision of the Agroforestry Program Advisor, the intern will perform the following tasks:

  • Research on agroforestry species biomass and intercropping systems 
  • Research on agroforestry system pests/disease 
  • Assist in researching agroforestry organizations, institutions and best practices across the sector
  • Other related tasks as needed 

Skills/experience 

  • Students in bachelor programs (masters preferred) in agroforestry/forestry/ agriculture/environmental  science 
  • Experience working with smallholder farmers in developing countries 
  • Proficiency in verbal, written English 
  • Highly inspired by our goal to make Earth a better, cooler place 

Period and duration 

Start date: As soon as possible 
Timeframe: Three months with possibility of extension at 15-20 hours per week

Forest and Landscape Restoration Advisor, Ethiopia

WeForest (www.weforest.org) is a fast growing international non-profit organization with headquarters in Belgium. We      develop reforestation projects to combat global warming and extreme poverty. Our mission is to conserve and restore the ecological integrity of forests and landscapes by engaging communities to implement and deliver lasting solutions for climate, nature and people.

In Ethiopia, WeForest is engaged in large-scale Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) programs in Northern Ethiopia (Amhara and Tigray regions). Through our intervention, we contribute to the country's Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) strategy and Growth Transformation Plan. Partnerships with research institutes and universities are promoted across our interventions.

Ethiopia Program

WeForest is active in Ethiopia since 2016. The main aim of the projects are to improve ecosystem wellbeing and to benefit local community enabling  more productive and resilient landscapes. In general, the overall program comprises with three main components: (i) ecological restoration and conservation of degraded forests and soils, (ii) livelihood improvement of local community, and (iii) capacity building, research, knowledge dissemination and scaling up best practices. Furthermore, the project focuses on gender equity and establishing strong linkages among governmental, non-governmental and private stakeholders. WeForest Ethiopia with its partners restored since 2016 more than 11,000 ha degraded lands and engaged over 7,000 households in sustainable income generating businesses.

Our activities are growing and WeForest is now looking for a talented Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) Advisor to achieve by 2030 the ambitious plan to restore up to 65,000 ha degraded forest and landscapes and to engage over 40,000 households in sustainable income earning businesses.

Role

The Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) Advisor will work under the supervision of WeForest Ethiopia Country Director and in close cooperation with WeForest’s partners. He will provide technical support related to forest governance, forest management, land resources assessment, forest and degraded communal land restoration, livelihoods and monitoring and evaluation. The candidate will also contribute to identify and develop new FLR projects.

  • Salary: Competitive package for a small NGO, based on prior experience.
  • Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with significant travel in rural areas
  • Working hours: Full-time, working Monday through Saturday morning, up to a maximum of 44 hours per week. Hours will vary depending on project needs and flexibility is essential.

Responsibilities include:

Partnership support – in close cooperation with WeForest partners

  • Support efficient and effective communication between WeForest and current and potential partners
  • Assist partner organizations in project planning, budgeting, monitoring and evaluating for FLR activities
  • Contribute to project progress and technical reports on FLR activities  (both for land restoration and livelihood development programs )
  • Assist partners in liaising with local, district and regional authorities and in engaging with forest-dependent communities
  • Represent WeForest in meetings and events as needed

Technical FLR support

  • Conduct ecological resources assessments and socioeconomic surveys (vegetation, soil, water, livelihood, and other social surveys)
  • Supervise the management of the nurseries and quality of seedlings production
  • Coordinate the planning of FLR activities and supervise their implementation
  • Support the development and adoption of Forest Management Plan and local forest bylaws
  • Provide technical training and support to experts, development agents, nurseries workers and community members involved in FLR activities (e.g. agroforestry and livelihood, forest management, GIS and remote sensing, irrigation and water management, soil and water conservation etc…)
  • Develop and disseminate FLR best practices (e.g. assisted natural regeneration, social forestry, soil and water conservation, resources assessment technics and monitoring and evaluation,  agroforestry and other livelihood activities)
  • Support the development of business plans for best and selective livelihood interventions to target areas of the project

Programme development

  • Support the identification and design of new FLR projects in Ethiopia

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Essential:

  • At last M.Sc. or equivalent experience in forest management, agroforestry, Natural Resources  Management and related fields 
  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience in FLR or watershed management projects, in designing, management, implementation, and technical advisory position
  • Successful track record in new project identification and development
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills in English (both speaking and writing)
  • Familiarity with project M&E frameworks, tools and protocols
  • Good moderation, facilitation and training skills
  • Ability to use and understand GIS and other basic natural resources monitoring software
  • Flexible in terms of traveling and living conditions
  • Good team player

Desirable:

  • Track record with gender-sensitive participatory, governance and inclusion approaches
  • Track record in grant applications
  • Track record in writing scientific articles
  • Track record in donor report writing

Responsibilities

Working within a team that supports and nurtures our current funders, you will position WeForest externally to connect with our core audience of potential new partners and funders. Working closely with the CEO as well as the wider team you will develop and implement marketing content and strategies and tell our story with passion and credibility. As chief storyteller you are a fantastic copywriter and act as editor in chief for all our content to ensure that all our content, branding and messaging is on point and done with excellence.

You will build systems, structures, and strategies that build the top end of the fundraising funnel.  This will include:

  • Content marketing strategy development for your target audience of potential new partners and funders.
  • Implement and manage an email marketing system in close collaboration with the fundraising team and current CRM software (Salesforce).
  • Content production and management: You can create content yourself, though more often you will facilitate and manage the production of content (e.g. annual report, video scripts and finished videos, presentations, special campaigns, etc) with assistance from the team and freelance support. You will identify and manage the process to deliver on time and budget.
  • Copywriting: Lead, shape and manage written content for web, social media etc. in close collaboration with our fundraising, science and operations teams. You will keep up to date with industry trends, advise on and adjust the content strategy and editorial line as necessary.
  • Editing: Acting as as editor-in-chief for all content, you will ensure quality, clarity and consistency of brand voice, style and tone.
  • Website:  Maintain the (soon-to-be-launched) website branding and content, working with the Communications Manager for technical support.  
  • SEO/SEA: Manage the SEO/SEA processes and consultants to build organic search traffic over time; ensuring your analysis of results is used to optimize content.
  • Analytics and Tracking: You will measure the impact of all content, adjusting where necessary and ensure our messaging is aligned. This will include editorial content audits to identify gaps and inconsistencies.

Required skills and qualifications

You LOVE, LOVE, LOVE writing and storytelling, have outstanding writing skills and storytelling capacities with an editorial eye. Experience of creating Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR)-related content is strongly preferred. You also have:

  • A passion for our mission, and commitment to our vision and values.
  • A degree or master in journalism, translation, communication, marketing, advertising (as copywriter), Business Administration or another relevant field and/or at least 5 years of relevant professional experience with a similar role such as Content Manager or Copywriter in an agency.
  • Outstanding spoken and written English, good knowledge of at least a second European language is an asset.
  • The ability to turn rough copy into engaging, inspiring, clear, concise and authoritative FLR-related content for a wide range of audience, encompassing both digital and traditional communications activity.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • The understanding of Google algorithms and optimization tools (no technical knowledge is required).

JOB SUMMARY

Global warming is one of the biggest challenges of our time and large-scale forest conservation & restoration will help reverse it. The task is gigantic, yet it is feasible, and we know we cannot succeed alone: we have historically been funded by corporates (investments and donations) and have more recently become a trusted partner to a small group of Trusts and Foundations who value our holistic approach, practical experience, and transparency. This is where your expertise comes in. You will nurture our current funders and lead the development of new partnerships with trusts and foundations (and family offices), focusing on grants primarily above €200,000. Your proactive and driven nature means that you seek out opportunities, identify strategies to get results and can successfully gain the support of internal colleagues to achieve results. It has become fundamental to our ability to scale our impact in also overlooked regions, to receive more and larger grants.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

In this role you will:

  • Build and secure new funding: Research, develop and secure new sources of income from trusts and foundations, with a strong focus on funders with a potential to give €200,000+ grants and funding opportunities.
  • Write outstanding funding communications, including proposals, presentations, and reports.
  • Nurture relationships: Manage a portfolio of current foundation donors, building strong, strategic relationships and implementing creative engagement plans to grow opportunities and income.
  • Build excellent internal working relationships to engage staff at all levels to coordinate donor engagement and manage prospective and existing donors effectively.
REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

With a proven track record of securing high value corporate partnerships in a commercial or charity setting, you will also have:

  • A passion for our cause and love the challenge of building corporate partnerships.
  • Experience in some of the following subjects: climate change, nature-based solutions, international development and/or poverty alleviation.
  • A proven track record of building and maintaining/ managing successful income generation (6+figures) from corporate partners.
  • Natural leadership with an ability to create a vision for how partnerships can work for companies, and your creativity means you can translate all the different aspects of our work into meaningful and compelling opportunities to meet the needs and expectations of corporate partners.
  • Practical experience in effectively using relevant marketing and social media platforms to reach companies and generate new leads.
  • Excellent planning, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication in English and at least one other European language; able to translate complex details into concise and impactful information.
  • Experience of using a CRM/Salesforce.
