WeForest is delighted to announce a major gift of €1M from Nationale Postcode Loterij – made possible by the Dutch people coming together to make a positive impact on People. Nature. and Climate.

This generous donation advances WeForest’s flagship projects in Malawi and South America, aimed at promoting biodiversity and supporting communities in harmony with nature.

The Nationale Postcode Loterij, recognized for its commitment to creating a fair, healthy, and green world, has supported charitable causes since its inception in 1989. Through a unique lottery system where participants’ postcodes serve as their lottery numbers, the Loterij creates a sense of community and shared success, contributing over €8B to environmental and social initiatives.

This new funding strengthens WeForest’s flagship project in UNESCO’s Mount Mulanje Biosphere Reserve in Malawi, home to unique species such as the Mulanje chameleon and the endemic Mulanje cedar, Malawi’s national tree. Additionally, in South America, the gift funds the creation of essential wildlife corridors that connect fragmented areas of the Atlantic Forest, home to 5% of the world’s biodiversity.

David Bircher, WeForest’s Head of Impact Partnerships, sees the gift as a model of values-aligned philanthropy. “The Postcode Loterij is the type of collaborative, trusting, and community-led partnership that we love here at WeForest. Not only does it provide needed resources, it’s a bridge between Dutch, Malawian, and South American communities who are committed to building a greener, fairer world.”

The Nationale Postcode Loterij’s support is a testament to the power of collective action in addressing the planet’s most pressing environmental and social challenges – and WeForest is grateful to be a trusted partner in delivering positive, sustainable solutions.
