Make a meaningful change this Earth Day

April marks the celebration of Earth Month, with the highlight, Earth Day, falling today.

If, like us, your inboxes have been full of tips on going green, from everyone from your bank to your favourite clothes shop, we understand it might start to feel a bit overwhelming.

While the usual advice to conserve water, volunteer for cleanups, plant trees, and recycle is important, we think there’s room to go further.

So this Earth Day, we’re sharing tips that look at the bigger picture, aiming for changes that don’t just tick a box for Earth Day but integrate into our lives for lasting impact.

Here are our top picks for actions that are a little different and focus on long-term habits and meaningful changes.

  1. Use your voice

One of the most significant actions you can take is to speak up. From writing to politicians to discussing with friends, family and colleagues, spreading awareness of the importance of forests to the planet is key.

Forests cover nearly 31% of the world and are home to more than 80% of all terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects. Use your social platforms to champion the Earth and share our posts on Earth Day.

  1. Elevate your daily habits

Why not choose sustainable coffee, in a recyclable cup?

We’re so passionate about sustainable coffee, we’re supporting the Apuí Agroforestry Coffee Initiative in Brazil, working with IDESAM to support local communities to produce agroforestry coffee.

The forest-based production systems regenerate soil fertility, increase coffee production and reforest the land.

Adjusting our daily routines can significantly lessen our environmental footprint, and drinking agroforestry coffee is something we can definitely get behind.

  1. Sustainable beauty and fashion

Swap your usual payday treat for a brand that is sustainable.

We’re teamed up with trailblazers like Flora & Curl, who use the power of plants to promote healthy hair, and Dazzle Dry, a nail care line free from harmful chemicals, animal byproducts and animal testing. Businesses like this are reshaping beauty and fashion with the environment in mind.

When it comes to being more conscious with clothing, you can shop local, buy second-hand from thrift stores and charity shops or even organise a regular clothing swap.

  1. Know your stuff

To be informed is to be empowered, so here’s three news sources and influencers we’re loving at the moment.

Positive News – The first media organisation in the world dedicated to quality, independent reporting about what’s going right.

The Garbage Queen – Climate activist Alaina Wood who is best known for her weekly Good Climate News series.

James Stewart – Climate and science expert, journalist and presenter of the Saving Planet Earth podcast.

  1. Grow, don’t plant

This Earth Day, while the enthusiasm for planting trees is commendable, we urge a deeper commitment. It’s essential to recognise that simply planting trees without a sustainable plan for a forest’s long-term protection can fall short of making a real difference. In most of our restoration projects, we are growing trees rather than planting them.

Our approach is holistic. Rather than just planting trees, we work to restore landscapes and protect them from deforestation over the long term.

This strategy means that our efforts lead to thriving ecosystems, not just tree counts.

Learn more about our approach here.

If you’re also able to support us this Earth Month, there are a number of way you can get behind our transformative restoration projects to fight climate change, boost biodiversity and uplift local communities. Find out more here.
