ZAMBIA - Fruitful farming @ the Kamfinsa Prison.

Combining socio-economic reinsertion with environmental stewardship is possible. In the Kamfinsa Prison, Zambia planting fruit trees, Moringa, medicinal and timber trees on 45 ha impacts the lives of the 1800 inmates and their families and helps relieve pressure on indigenous forests.

This will make diverse and nutritious food available to all; surplus fruit and vegetable generates income for medicine and medical equipment. The timber income will in future fund the upgrade of the medical center and a gym. Inmates and guards received permaculture training which in the long run will benefit their when they try to rebuild their lives.

Planting started in January 2011 with 9,000 trees and will continue with the next rains in November 2011.

This project is seeking to lead a paradigm shift toward self sustainability in Correctional Facilities in Zambia through an innovative Permaculture Reforestation.Working hand in hand with our local partner Rainlands Ltd, we will plant 79ha of a variety of trees and 10ha of permaculture vegetables to reduce soil erosion on degraded land within its boundaries, or 57% of its land area. We will do this within a permaculture system across the prison lands for higher and more diverse productivity, giving inmates a more balanced diet and providing income from the sale of surplus produce.

The prison farm will produce a wide range of exotic and indigenous fruit and vegetables, including Moringa, an extremely valuable 'wonder tree' that can be used as a much needed nutritional supplement. Officers, officers' families and inmates will undertake permaculture training courses so that on their release and integration back into society, citizens take with them new skills for sustainable living, building their self esteem and giving them a greater ability to positively contribute within their communities.
