Restoring the Mata Atlântica in Brazil
From subsistence farming & cattle ranching to rainforest stewardship.
In the heart of the most diverse and endangered tropical rainforests on the planet, a new business model is being seeded: converting subsistence farming into sustainable rainforest enterprises. People often ask us what our part is in the movement to prevent deforestation. WeForest enables us to take reforestation in Brazil a step further: the farmers of the Mata Atlantica learn how to harvest rainforest seeds and create their own nurseries. They are also educated in how to phase out slash & burn farming and cattle ranching as principal livelihood activities and how to develop and nurture a growing demand for sustainable rainforest products. This entire project is powerfully driven by the will and desire of the local people, who simply need help to fill in some missing pieces, to complete the puzzle.
Once the most diverse rainforest on the planet, the Mata Atlantica region it is now the most endangered.
